I've been away for too long....

My last official post was in January of 2015... since then a lot of things have happened...  Here's a quick rundown - and I plan to do a bit more detail on all of these soon!

Greatest Hits REWIND!

Honorable Mentions I never blogged about: Weezer Show in ATL Dec. 2014 and Pearl Jam in Memphis 2014. Sad I didn't write more about these - I may need to do a concert recap!

APRIL 2015
Took a trip to Denver, Colorado
I witnessed my first show at Red Rocks! [Disco Buscuits]
And one more show at the Filmore!  [The Replacements]
Hit up Record Store Day 2015 in Denver, Colorado and also scored some amazing tacos too!

Mike bought a new ride! His name is "Boom" and he's an awesome Jeep Renegade!

HAD A VERY BUSY JULY 2015
We did US Tour so to speak in July - ever single weekend we were going somewhere and doing something. We put a lot of miles on "BOOM" this month!

Celebrated July 4th, 2015 in Washington, DC with The Foo Fighters and a ton of great bands
AND celebrated FF's 20th Anniversary!

Spent the following weekend in Atlanta with Mike and went to see Anthony Bourdain speak!

Went to the first ever Sloss Fest in Birmingham, AL

Enjoyed a family beach trip to Orange Beach, AL.

AUGUST 2015
I survived my first Whole30 and did 4 more after that!

SEPTEMBER 2015
Started to work out again, take up running and purchased a bike all in the matter of months and stuck with the life style through 2016 and well into 2017.

NOVEMBER 2015
As a family effort we took over Thanksgiving in 2015. Helping out Michael's mom.
We ruled at making Turkey, and a ton of the other sides and were asked to bake the turkey again in 2016. It's amazing what some sibling team work and vodka can accomplish!

New Tattoos - for myself and Mike, and his brothers and father.

Discovered Pre-workout and a love for Rosé.
Not at the same time mind you, or mixed together... just a general statement.

DECEMBER 2015
Celebrated Christmas at our home, having Mike's family over for a change of pace after a long fall (see below).

FEBRUARY 2016
Headed home to Maryland for a weekend to have a late Christmas with my father and friends. Experience a great afternoon in Downtown Frederick for their Fire and Ice Festival! Ice Sculptures and shots for all!

Enjoyed a Chili Contest at our favorite Local Brewery [Singin' River Brewery] - Mike was able to judge. Our favorite didn't win, but they should have!

MARCH 2016
Enjoyed a few weekends of day drankin' on patios downtown and just l-i-v-i-n'!
The weather was so warm we actually took our first kayak trip at the end of March!

APRIL 2016
Enjoyed the final day of our favorite local vinyl store Pegasus Records and Records Store Day all in one. We went all out - spent way too much money, got misty eyed, listened to live bands and got some great items from our friends and favorite music store the Shoals ever had.

Fully ENJOYED JAZZFEST 2016 - Full recap to come. This was an extremely special Pearl Jam concert!

JUNE 2015
Our Town held it's first ever Pride Fest - we were there!

Traveled to Denver, CO again in 2016. We travel to visit my Sister-in-Law and her family.
Hiked a mountain, ate great tacos, went to Red Rocks again! [Jason Isbell + the 400 Unit]

OCTOBER 2016
Hit up the Alabama Vs. Texas A&M 2016 game! ROLL TIDE!
We also celebrated our wedding anniversary that day as well!

Had a fun trip to our favorite part of ATL to meet up with my Bestie from back home!

NOVEMBER 2016
Watched and Election unfold in the way I never thought imaginable.
Let's NOT discuss here, m'kay?

Witnessed quite a few great live shows here at home!
John Paul White • Secret Sisters • The Pollies • Red Mouth • Willodeans • St. Paul and the Broken Bones • Space Tyger • Belle Adair (just to name a few).

DECEMBER 2016
I TURNED 40!!! Holy shit! Michael threw me an epic surprise Birthday party!!!

My office acquired a "work cat" - she showed up at our door cold, and starving and he's been with us every since. He was amply named "Buddy" after Buddy the Elf.

Celebrated Christmas 2016 in Maryland with my dad and Friends!

MARCH 2017
Finally watched Big Little Lies and was instantly hooked!
I'm also obsessed with the soundtrack on Spotify (Thanks Hutch!)

And watched a ton of other shows: Newest notes: Riverdale, iZombie and 13 Reasons Why.
I loved them all - I'm a bit more addicted to television than I'd like to admit.

Didn't celebrate St. Patrick's Day like we had hoped...

APRIL 2017
Discovered a love for puzzles.

MAY 2017
Witnessed Soundgarden for the first, and sadly last time in my life.
Losing Chris Cornell in the music world is a bit unreal to me.

Celebrated a 2nd, successful year of the John Oubre for Antiqua Charity Golf Tournament.
It's hard work, but worth it to raise money for a cause he was passionate about.

My father moved from Maryland here to Alabama to be closer to me and Michael. I think he's enjoying it so far!

JUNE 2016
Discovered Wine in a Can = Life is Good!

And the Hardest Struggles: REWIND!

AUGUST 2015:
Dealt with the biggest loss I've felt since losing my mother, in losing Mike's younger brother John Oubre. The family will never be 100%, he was too important to all of us. We are all still taking this day by day, even though the event happened in 2015. Sometimes you just can't fix a hole in your heart, especially when someone left such a large tear when they left. I've been struggling with a post to honor him for almost two years now. I'm almost there, and hope to share, soon.

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2017:
Also dealt with the joy of discovering I was pregnant this past February. After a little over a year of trying. That excitement was shortly followed by the loss of this joy, due to an ectopic pregnancy and emergency surgery. I have a lot to say about this journey as well, but I will have to complete my post.

------

These past few years have been filled with ups and downs. Most of which I do want to write a detailed post about, so please be patient.

If you're still here after my long hiatus, thanks for sticking around, it's nice to have you back, and to be back!

gearing up for the weekend!

This weekend is the SEC Championship game. Those of you that know me, know that I started following the Crimson Tide when I moved here 8+ years ago to be with my then boyfriend, now husband. It's been an amazing ride. This year the championship will be between Alabama and Georgia!

We are so ready to yell for our team this weekend! I'm over at From the Sidelines today talking all about the love of my "new home" team and this VERY important game! Check it out!!!

high five for friday! 9.7.2012

How excited are you that it's Friday? I actually went to work with a smile on my face knowing I could totally own today!  I am linking up with Lauren over at From My Grey Desk for her weekly High Five for Friday ritual. So here goes... my top 5 from the week!

link up!

ONE //
I was really excited when my small bag of goodies from American Eagle arrived today. Truth be told I really wanted it to arrive yesterday so I'd have a fun new "college color day" gear to wear. I purchased a little something for me, and a little something for Mike and I to share. {both via ae.com}

TWO //
This week marks the official start of NLF football's regular season. I'm so excited to see how my Steelers stack up agains the Broncos and Mr Manning! As you can tell it's pretty much football all across the board here, right now.

THREE //
My work is getting back to regular hours and while I will miss the overtime, I won't miss the exhaustion I've been feeling. Maybe next week I can finally get back to working out on the regular.

FOUR //
While it's still hot as hell here in the South, the anticipation of Fall is in the air. I'm so looking forward to cool nights, grilling out and not sweating, relaxing on the front porch with a blanket or hoodie on and hopefully lots of camping trips. No bugs, and cold weather is great for camping!

FIVE //
Tonight is First Fridays here in my small town and it's a big night for the locals. Lots of artists will sell their art, jewelry and wares and I can't wait to walk around and take part in it all. Word on the street is my office downtown will have it's doors open and I'm looking forward to seeing all they have on sale. {My office is in a different location - with the printing plant, so sometimes it's fun to see how the other half of my company lives and works). I also love that buying local is made very easy the first friday of EVER month here in small town Alabama.

I am so ready for the weekend - I hope you have a wonderful one planned for yourselves! I'm ready to relax, scream for my teams and enjoy some time with my husband. It's been long over due with all the hours I've been putting in for work.

ENJOY YOURSELVES!

I've decided to adopt a 12 oz. baby

In looking through my Instagram feed (follow me @turnedup2eleven) I have come to realize that I take pictures of my booze as much as a mother takes pictures of her children. So, since I do that so often I decided I should stop being so selfish and adopt a 12 oz. bottled baby and name him Frederick. He loves football, bars, chilling in a Saturday afternoon and having great conversations on a bar stool and pizza. Just like his mother.

Happy Weekend Everyone - it's lazy Sunday! *cheers*

Just myself, Frederick and Mike chilling at the bar

Celebrating Southern: Game Day Fashion

Before I even get into todays topic I had to add a list of things that I forgot from yesterday's post about Southern food. How on earth did I forget Fried Okra, Fried Squash/Zucchini, Sweet Potato Casserole or the big one, GRITS!!! How did I forget all of those? Let's just say moving to the South has broadened my taste buds AND my waistband.

Today I'm linking up with Leslie again over at A Blonde Ambition!
It's time to continue the Celebrating Southern Week!

Game Day Fashion and Essentials

Enough of that let's get down to business today's topic is GAME DAY FASHION! NFL's preseason is less than a month way and the college circuit isn't far behind!!! Again, from a Northern girls point of view. Where I was born and raised it's a bit difficult to think of getting totally dolled up for a football game, or any sporting event for that matter. I mean ladies, think about it, up North football games can get SERIOUSLY cold. You wouldn't find a Northern Lass bearing her legs in a cute dress during a Steelers game. [Yes, I'm a Steelers fan from Maryland, deal with it.] Southern football, totally different. It stays warm here much longer into the season. Today I want to talk to you about what I'd totally rock at an SEC game! [Let's face it, I'm not dressing up for an NFL game, I'm just not. My gear for that is a jersey and jeans. You can take a girl out of the North but you can't take the North out of the girl]. I want to also discuss Tailgating essentials. The stuff you want/need to have a great time at your next tailgate, even if you're just partying in your own backyard before the big game, which in my opinion can be JUST as fun!

via pinterest

My Loyalty
Let's get this out in the open - I'm a Steelers fan and an Alabama Crimson Tide Fan. I converted my husband into a Steelers fan, years ago, and he in turn blessed me with the new love of Alabama football. Truth be told when you move here you have to choose sides. It's Auburn or Alabama. I choose wisely for my new family, most members roll with the tide. Funny story, I chose my 'Bama loyalty before I moved here. My reason for picking 'bama was due to Forrest Gump. I still want to get myself a #44 jersey in his honor. Yes, I'm a dork.

So you're in the South, and like me you might be new to game day rituals. Let me give you a little inside track to how things go for me, in my neck of the woods.

FRIDAY BEFORE GAME DAY
You best wear your colors to work. I don't care if it's a red dress, or a houndstooth skirt, you rock it. If you're lucky like me you work in a casual environment and you can rock one of your many team t-shirts. I always sport an Alabama t-shirt the Friday before game day.

SATURDAY MORNING
If you aren't fortunate enough to get to go to the game for your team, no fear you can still dress up, but I would save your dressy duds for the game. I wake up in the morning on a Saturday, shower, and face my day in my lucky Bama shirt on. Yes, I have a lucky shirt. I've been wearing it for years and I must say it seems to be doing the trick. (2 National Championships since I started rooting for Alabama, say whatttt?).

If you are in fact heading to the game for tailgating well then sister you better get yourself done up right! I've been to one Bama game so far and I will be honest I felt completely underdressed. I wore a cute ruffled tank top, had a signature houndstooth scarf for flair and jeans. Yep, I said it, I wore jeans. Before all of the true Southern Belles judge me or gasp, please realize this is all new to me. Upon arriving in Tusacaloosa I realized the error of my ways. I'm looking forward to my next game and you best believe I will do it up right. I may not wear a dress but I will certainly accessorize the heck out of my outfit.
Opening Day • Paul W. Bryant Museum • Myself, Mike, His brother and brother's girlfriend - ROLL TIDE!
Tell me my brother-in-law's girl doesn't look adorable for game day, I dare you! She's a pro at game day dressing. She went to Alabama for most of her college career and she knows what works for game day, for sure.

One last image for fun - the Sea of Crimson!

Lastly... SUNDAY
If you aren't into NFL and your team wins on Saturday then I say round out the weekend with your teams shirt. Show your support. However, if you are like me and live for Sunday football as much as Saturday football then you need to wake up and put on your teams colors. I sport my favorite Steelers tshirts until game time and then switch into my favorite jersey. It's all about comfort when you're on the couch watching the game. If by some strange twist of fate I made it to a Steelers game I would dress accordingly. I might luck out and see them at the Tennessee Titans stadium and not have to worry about freezing. My jeans, jersey and flip flops would do the trick. However if I ventured north to see them, I would bargain on bundling up - for sure!

Dreamy Game Day Looks

I thought I would share some of my favorite DREAM looks for game day. Now I know I'm only showing Alabama approved  (and maybe Arkansas since we share the same colors) gear but you know there are MILLIONS of ways to dress up and prep for your big game day! Have fun with it. Sport what you like and what you feel comfortable in ladies. If you have to walk all over campus, DON'T wear huge heels, unless you love pain. If you're hanging around your own tailgate party, then vamp it up girl! I've been to tailgates in Tuscaloosa and the town does it up right. If you have to wear heels make friends with a family that owns a golf cart, it will give your piggies a break as you socialize with everyone and their mother.  My husband went to Ole Miss for a Tide game and was shocked how under dressed he felt. He can't wait to take me back there next year when we meet Ole Miss in their house again. Don't worry ladies, I will be finding the perfect outfit, treating it like Prom and such. I don't want to be the Bama girl that looks unfit to be partying there.

Tailgating in the Cooler Months

via pinterest

I think this outfit is perfect for an Alabama (or other team that uses red) fall game. The boots are adorable and can be switched out as needed and the fun dots are festive.

via pinterest
A Bama fan can't go wrong in sporting Houndstooth for the big day. Paying tribute to the Late Great Coach Bryant always puts a smile on any Crimson Tide fans face.

via pinterest
BE STILL MY ACCESSORY LOVIN' HEART! Having a trademark bubble necklace in your teams colors is a sure fire way, to me, to Southern Belle up any game day outfit. Even a tshirt, although I wouldn't recommend simply rocking a ratty tshirt with such a lovely piece of jewelry. I have a few bits of jewelry I wear regularly for game day that include a huge elephant necklace and some houndstooth elephant earrings. Not at the same time mind you, I'm not MR. T!

via pinterest
While you won't catch me purchasing these shoes, or wearing them I do think they are a really fun and adorable way to show your team spirit. If I'm rocking cowboy boots they will be classic ones, NOT Alabama-centric.

via pinterst
Again, in rockin' the houndstooth one can do no wrong in Alabama. For the colder months or even Basketball season there are tons of great coats and jackets to show your team spirit. Paired with a cute little red rose or ribbon button I think this would be PERFECT for game day!

Game Day Essentials

You can't have a great tailgate without a few essentials!
Good food • Good Drinks • Great Company! {and close bathrooms are always a plus!}
And it's a must to learn all the words to your teams fight song! A must!
** At our house we even have lucky glasses we drink out of on game day. True story!

So pitch a tent, get some grub, show your team spirit and as always be kind to your neighbors at the tailgate even if they are sporting the wrong colors. Being in the South is about hospitality, not hostility!

SOME OF MY FAVORITE GAME DAY FINDS!

Ladies, drink responsibly, no one wants to hold you up, or hold your hair before the big game even starts. Or at half time either! Take it easy, you'll be there all day!

via google
CORNHOLE
A great game to keep you busy prior to the game, and possibly a great thing to help you burn off some time after the game rather than sitting in traffic.

SEC BABY!
I'm not from the South but I know that SEC Football is probably the best group on the entire College Conference system - there I said it!

And I wouldn't be a tide fan without posting this so here you go!
ROLL TIDE ROLL!
GOOD LUCK IN 2012 BAMA!

friday favorites, confessions and musings

It's that time of the week again - time for Friday Favorites, Musings and Confessions! I have a lot to vent about, share and confess today so let's get to it!!!

via HoundstoothHut.com
Proceeds from purchase of this sticker go to benefit Red Cross Tornado Relief
One year ago today tornadoes tore through the state of Alabama and surrounding states making a path of destruction. It seems like only yesterday and in many areas it probably still looks like it was only yesterday. I still get chills, and get overwhelmed with emotion when I see video, or hear victims talk about all they lost that day. While many local residents across the state, not just in Tuscaloosa alone, lost many things, I think the state also gained a lot too. The state pulled together, helped their neighbors and still continue to do so today. I am marking this as one of my favorites because I wanted to share a touching article about the tornadoes, written by a friend of mine {my Sister-in-law's sister to be exact}, for the Tuscaloosa News. She has a Mom Column, THE MOM STOP,  and she wanted to write about the storms and how she hopes her children will learn from them. Knowing her two adorable kids, it's easy for me to be touched by her words, but I think any mother, or human with a heart can gain the love, support and passion she has for her hometown, home state and community.

Enjoy!!

LINKING UP WITH LESLIE over at BLONDE AMBITION BLOG
for My Friday Confessions

  • I gave myself a whole "talk" this week about not skipping a single workout and what did I do yesterday - I totally skipped my workout. To be fair there were a mountain of dirty dishes in the sink and even though dinner was a crock-pot meal there was more to prepare after I got home. I think I need to get my butt out of bed in the AM if I'm going to make this workout stuff happen for real.
  • I also slacked because I didn't want to miss a second of the 2012 NFL Draft last night. Alabama had 5 players projected to go in the first round - 4 of them did... sadly NONE of them went to The Pittsburgh Steelers and I'm LIVID! We had Dont'a Hightower in our grasp and we didn't pick him {as it was predicted we would}. Gosh, I say WE like I'm part of the team and management. I can tell you for sure if I was... I'd be making the right choice picking a Bama Boy. That being said, my confession is that I cussed like a sailor, out loud, on twitter, you name it. I was and am still PISSED!
  • My musings below are rather confessional in their own right too - keep reading!!!
Last but NEVER least I'm voicing my Random Musings and
LINKING UP WITH SHANA over at FUMBLING TOWARDS NORMALCY

  • I've been having mini panic attacks in my mind {not actual physical attacks} over my debt situation. It's like the other day I woke up and realized I wasn't getting any younger, I couldn't rent forever and one day this body of mine was going to have to pop out a kid before I got too old to do so. Set forth the PANIC... I realize that my debt isn't substantial compared to other people's debt. Others might make more than I do, and thus might be able to pay for more debt. I know I don't make a ton of money and I know over the years I have lived well outside my means at times. I've made a choice and it's got to stop. From this day forward I have chosen to take responsibility and control of my debt, my money and my future with Mike.
  • This all came to light because I was budgeting and trying to figure out how to get ahead. I currently have an IRA account and the company that handles my finances for that sent me a free book as a Christmas gift a few years ago. Feeling down and out I finally opened the damn thing and started to read. It's one of those "A-HA!" moments when you're like shit the answer has been here ALL along I just neglected to pick-up this amazing book {even after my Father told me it was amazing} and read it for myself. I'm very bullheaded, VERY bullheaded. It's like I have to think it's MY idea or it's no good.
  • So here I am... taking control. I'm going to figure out the proper way to classify spending, saving etc. Do I need it, or do I just want it... seems simple enough right? There was a great line in the book that was making the point about figuring out what is needed or optional in your spending. The author stated... "Oreos... yes they are OPTIONAL!" And it made me realize that half the crap I spent my money on, often is totally optional. It's freeing when you start to think how much you let what everyone else is buying dictate what you think you NEED, when it's really a want. Do I need that purse I will use twice and then stop after it's "out of style", NO. I don't need it so why buy it.  Shana did a great experiment about not spending on non-necessities things for a month, such a smart thing. I plan to make this a habit, and yes, I'll take time to blog about it.
  • Our "house search" has now been deemed - searching for a more affordable apartment/townhouse and/or downsizing a bit to save for BOTH of us to pay off our debt we both have... novel idea huh?
  • I know I will possibly never be completely debt free, but I can certainly be debt free in the sense that nothing is for not. House debt, and car debt I consider to be totally different than credit card debt, wouldn't you agree?
  • I'm no one to share a lot of personal information so for me to even tell you I'm having these issues that I want to correct is a big step in my process. The next big step, taking the advice from the book I'm reading and start writing EVERY red sent I spend down for 6 months to see where I'm spending and wasting money weekly, monthly, daily.
Thanks for listening - any tips you may have are greatly appreciated! Have a great weekend, we'll be laying low, entertaining at the house and OH YEAH, NOT spending money unnecessarily!!!

the good, the bad and the ugly.

I was going to save this post for my bi-weekly posting over at From the Sidelines but I just couldn't hold it in any longer. Plain and simple, last night sucked, big time. The Steelers lost to the Broncos and my worst enemy, Tim Tebow. I brought this on myself I was the first to say last Friday that Tebow will knock my team out of the playoffs and take the Steelers down, it would be just my luck for this to happen. And you know what... it did. GRRRR!

My only mental saving grace is that A) our team wasn't at 100% with our line-up and B) Now I can relax. Sure I wanted my boys to go all the way but let's be realistic, we aren't operating with a full starting line up, we are battered, beaten and would still have to make it through New England AND my best guess would be the Ravens in order to make it to the big game. Yes that is my prediction as much as I hate to see it happen I think the Ravens have a great shot of making it to the Super Bowl this year.

THE GOOD:
Tim Tebow. Even if I think he's BAD, he's still good. The world's golden boy. There is no denying that Tebow is a good kid. I'm just not a fan, the boy gets under my skin. I can't say anything more positive than that he's a good kid so I'll stop there. [You do realize this is killing me not to go all word vomit about him right?]

THE BAD:
Steelers are out of the playoffs and I'm pissed but coping as well as a fan can at this point. As stated above, we could have done better, much better and frankly why the fuck didn't we try for that field goal to win the game? Sure all the odds were stacked against us, and it had never been done before but why on earth would you back down from a chance. Their Fear: Oh the ball might get tipped, the Broncs might run it back for a touch down - well GUESS WHAT... they did that anyway in overtime and we were hung out to dry. I am all about taking chances, and that was one I feel we could have risked. No guts, no glory.

THE UGLY:
I can't believe I'm going to admit this... but here goes. Last night before the game they were showing pre-game interviews with Tebow [my eyes just rolled as I typed this]. Tebow was discussing his excitement about playing against the Steelers and how he has watched them for the past decade and always admired them. Nice suck up Tebow, very sweet of you. In the process of watching this and trying not to get my eye balls stuck in the back of my head I started to joke with Mike about Tebow's lovely sore on his lip. Be it from a bump at practice, or an actual cold sore I didn't care - I started to bust on him wondering how his virgin ass contracted herpes. Well... I guess the joke was on me... after the loss I sulked... I watched Cleveland Show, Family Guy and American Dad and then went to bed... this morning I went to the bathroom and noticed I had gotten a sore on my lip, a blister if you will, over night. SERIOUSLY!?! I never get cold sores, blisters or anything funky on my lip unless they are overly chapped. I guess this is my payment for busting on one of the flock. Tebow got me back - divine justice for the golden boy. That makes me the "UGLY" for being ugly.

IN OTHER NEWS
TONIGHT IS THE BIG NIGHT AL VS. LSU!
[You know where my heart lies]
via google • SEC, SEC, SEC, SEC

I guess either way this ends, SEC is a clear winner. But for me I will only be pleased if Bama takes the win to give us 14 National Championships.  For the record, I will say that normally LSU is one of my top five favorite SEC teams but tonight they are the enemy!

Now if you will excuse me, I've got to go find a way to hid my nasty lip AND get some things ready for the REAL game of the season! Alabama takes on LSU for the BCS National Championship. All I can say is ROLL MUTHA F'IN TIDE and I hope to end on a high note - after last night I don't know how much more I can take.

LESSON: Don't ever bust on Tebow... you might end up with bad hair, a sore on your lip or worse. He apparently IS the messiah and we should all bow down to him. Yeah, that isn't going to happen.

No Way José!

FINALLY THE TUSCALOOSA RECAP: Brought to you by the makers of procrastination!

So first off let me apologize for taking not one, but three? weeks to recap about my amazing weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. When I say work has been crazy, I haven't been lying.  With working late hours and coming in early there has been no time or energy for anything, much less blogging. I hope that this thorn in my side of O.T. actually comes to a halt soon, even though I've loved the extra money in my pocket.

Anybenjamin! For the record I've only ever been to one other college football game, it was a championship game held at the local university here in my current hometown. I've never been to a big SEC team's game, a Big 10 game, or even to a game at my own alma mater. It's fair to say that other than one professional football game years ago during pre-season (Skins vs. Eagles) I've never truly had the LIVE FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE! That was until a few weekends ago.

Shortly after receiving these in the mail...
{see the little Trojan helmet, yes, these are visitor tickets won off ebay - for a bad ass price!!!  You never would have known we were in the visitor section, the entire stadium was red and white all over, minus the very lower rows of our section that were gold and royal blue}

As soon as I held the tickets in my hand, I started to get excited - not on the outside mind you, but on the inside. I've always been a girl that's a bit of a "glass half empty" type. I just try not to get too emotional until it's absolutely necessary. Needless to say that true excitement factor started brewing the night before we were to head to Tuscaloosa. This made it difficult to sleep - I had visions of McElroy and Trent Richardson dancing in my head.

We woke up bright and early - thankfully I did all the real "glamour" work the night before. Toes painted a lovely shade of gun metal gray, hair straightened with a hint of red reflecting in it, outfit all picked out, koozies packed into our new rolling cooler and over night bags prepared. To give you an idea of how much we flew by the seat of our pants on this deal... we had no formal place to sleep that night. We were heading to Tuscaloosa on a hope and a prayer that someone we were friends with there would give us a place to rest our head. Our original plan? We were going to set up a bed in the back of my Jeep Cherokee complete with sleeping bags... one downfall, an hour into the trip I realized we forgot out pillows. No worries, we planned on being drunk off a Crimson win anyway so we'd be fine.

The ride was long, but enjoyable. Half way through I fired up the iPod. While spinning on random it landed on a Grateful Dead song. It seemed so fitting. Riding with the windows cracked the weather was a brisk and comfortable 70 degrees, unheard of in Alabama this time of year, but then again it was really early in the morning. Mike and I decided to tune up the Dead's greatest hits and roll on through to Tuscaloosa.

We made one pit stop to grab a couple of red bulls and a pack of razors. I'm sure the girl at the counter thought I was crazy. What was the razor pack for? Don't worry I wasn't going to shave my head like a Munk Tebow, I was actually aware that I had missed a spot shaving my armpits that morning and I knew it would drive me insane all. day. long. if I didn't handle it... Trip to the bathroom, swipe of the razor, $5.00 later and I was good to go. Seriously, would have driven me insane in my tank all day knowing that stubble was there - *issues?*.

From there it was on like Donkey Kong - we arrived soon enough into the great town of Tuscaloosa. The town was still a bit sleepy but the game day buzz was alive and well. The town was all decked out in red and white and most of that was on each and every person we saw on the street. With every passing minute we were in town the crowd grew and grew. Mike and I parked up the road from the central strip of the town and walked to our first destination. The Houndstooth. Truth be told I was really craving breakfast, but there didn't seem to be anywhere on the main strip providing eggs, cheese, and grease for me to down... instead we opted for a 10:30 AM brew and a bbq sandwich both were amazing and the perfect way to kick off game day.
{hers & his breakfast of champions}

I don't know why I didn't think to take a picture of our great view. From where we sat to enjoy our breakfast the street of the strip was right in front of us, great tunes were playing on the outside speakers of a bar across the way and in the distance above the downtown buildings we could see the very tops of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Then again... look at what's in front of me... I was hungry and this was the ONLY thing on my mind... well that and the fact that I was about to rip the overhead television off the wall if they mentioned Tebow's name one more damn time!! Sorry Gator fans and Bronco lovers I'm over him... O-V-E-R-OVEROVEROVER!

{My first view of the Stadium driving by... EEEE GIDDY!}

After a meal and waiting on Mike's younger brother J.O. to meet us we decided to walk around a bit. Like I said the entire town was buzzing with excitement. I wasn't sure what to expect in coming to T-town, I had no idea what the surrounding areas looked like, no clue what it meant to tailgate at the school and no idea where we were supposed to go and park. While walking I discovered that basically if you owned property close to the strip or the stadium you could make BANK selling parking spots. Seriously... $20 a pop! Many of the kids in the area will take their cars elsewhere and sell their spots in their apartment complex on game day, smart move kids! Thankfully we didn't have to worry about parking, instead Mike's sister-in-law's family lives in Tuscaloosa about three blocks from the Stadium and her brother-in-law is an employee of the school. This was perfect. Not only did we have a secure place to park the Jeep but remember my comment about sleeping in the Jeep, at least now if we did, we'd have a secure and quiet neighborhood to do this in. And yes, we're just that ghetto. WHAT? WHAT?

One's we arrived at the A's house we were able to hang out with Mr. and Mrs. A and their adorable little girl K, as well as Meet Mr. A's family who was in town for a visit. So far the morning was perfect the sun was bright and shining the weather was perfect (although in retrospect a black tank top was a super bad idea! I was getting a bit too hot outdoors most of the day due to it), and we were surrounded by friends.

We finally met up with J.O. and his girlfriend B and made our way over to where B's family was tailgating. Remember when I said I had never tailgated, or been to Tuscaloosa, well I was shocked to find out that people actually not only let you buy a spot to park your car, but will rent you a spot to park your RV as well! Random parking lots all over town were loaded to capacity with RV's, campers and cars.  B's father has his spot rented for the entire season and it's a great place to set up camp! Right near campus and you can see the Stadium as clear as day from the lot. Prime tailgating spot. I guess I was expecting one huge parking lot for the tailgating, close to the stadium. A place you could wonder around and see people - I guess I was thinking more along the lines of pro-ball, not college ball. In the end it was rather interesting getting to walk around campus and see all the tents set up on the Quad and all of the students partying and wandering around before game time.

We spent the early part of the afternoon before the game at B's family's RV enjoying free food, lots of tasty snacks and other games on the big screen. This definitely was the perfect Tailgating camp complete with it's own bathroom. No searching for a public restroom needed. Here we are, probably into our 3rd beer of the day... I think, but who was counting? Not me.

After we got our fill JO and B wanted to give us the tour of the campus. B used to go to Alabama and knew just where to take us. We enjoyed not only the campus but the Bryant Museum as well. It's nice to be a part of this schools huge history...even if I've only officially been a fan for the past 4-5 years. I got a little weepy in the museum, maybe it was PMS or maybe it's just that he was quite a coach and it is quite a legacy but I just enjoyed every moment of it. I also found out that "The Bear" coached for one year at the University of Maryland. That made me smile, being a girl from Maryland and all that.

NOTE: I forgot my houndstooth scarf I planned to wear for the game! GRRR!

Hey Packer fans I know it's hard to see but he does have a Green Bay
Mug on his desk filled with pencils.

{Can you tell how excited Mike was taking pictures in the museum?
He took a TON but I won't bore you with all of them.}
ROLL TIDE!

After our tour it was time to get our drink on. The four of us walked downtown and hoped in and out of a few of the great bars on the strip. Most were extremely packed which is to be expected on game day but we found a great little underground bar, the Bear Trap to get some drinks, some air conditioning and some good conversation before heading to the game.  I was introduced to "Baby Bombs" this weekend by B and JO. I had no idea you could get a Jager Bomb in a mini size!!! Much easier to deal with and much easier to walk after drinking as well!

{Mike & I before heading inside for the game}

{Me & B sipping on water. How cute is her outfit?}

Soon after our cocktails it was GAME TIME! Mike and I were so excited we could hardly contain ourselves. Walking into the stadium we caught the end of the Spirit Parade with the Cheerleaders, Big Al the mascot and most of the Million Dollar Band! I think I was about as excited as the 8 year old boy in front of me about all this, thankfully I'm potty trained or there might have been a mess on the floor!

I won't lie... I got chills walking into the stadium. It was loud, it was bright, and it's beautiful! We found our seats and holy CRAP were they awesome!!! Thank you again Mike for bidding on them and thank you Ebay seller for letting these go!

I wish I could give you a better idea of our seats, they were great and we were right where the Tide ran out onto the field. It was great, minus one thing.

See the lady in the foreground... see the mini couple behind us in the background... yep... we don't look smashed in there but we were. TIGHT, TIGHT, TIGHT!  There could have been a bit more room for us, but what can you do... they're benches. I now have a smaller ass (thank you P90X) and I'm the one paying the price for it. It was close for comfort but the crowd was loud and ready for a great night - the Tide delivered!!!

Stupid shadows messing up my cute pictures! Before Game Time!

FINAL SCORE: ALABAMA 48  / SAN JOSE  3

The entire game was amazing!!! I hated to leave it but by the middle of the fourth quarter I realized if we wanted to eat anywhere locally after the game, we needed to leave early and get a seat ASAP at a local place. We met up again with JO and B (they had different seats) and we made our way to a great little bar in town Buffalo Phil's. You all know me and chicken wings and buffalo sauce it's hard to pass up so that's exactly what I got... only I got tenders instead of wings. It took us 15 minutes to get a table, but once I ordered dinner it took them 5 minutes to bring it to me! (I'm sure it was under a heat lamp but seriously, CARE? They were good, juicy and 100% devoured in minutes!). Add to this a visit from Mr. and Mrs. A and we all had a great time sharing some laughs and drinks to end a great day.

My only disappointment with the evening was that apparently the whole town parties the night before the game, not after. That makes NO sense to me... if you have a great game you're supposed to party it up afterwards and celebrate but I guess because all the kids celebrate the night before.. they're too pooped to party again that next night. FOR SHAME! We didn't turn in early, but we didn't exactly WOOP it up that evening either.

After a long night of hanging out, and seeing the town thankfully we were able to crash at B's family's condo in Tuscaloosa. Her whole family hadn't shown up as originally planned so we had run of the couch which I was SO thankful for. I may say I'm a tough cooking but the jeep was TRULY a last resort  in my mind.

The next morning was a bit rough. I slept in my contacts, not the smartest move at all. Mike and I are the types that wake up and we're ready to go. We had to wait to get JO up to take us back to our Jeep and on our way back home.

All in all we had an amazing time and we are already planning our trip back. We don't have tickets for the Homecoming game but we figured we would have just as much fun hanging with B's dad at his RV watching the game and friends at their tent on the quad that we wouldn't need tickets. The atmosphere alone is worth the fun!!! We've been warned we need to come the night before the game this time though... so we shall see.

So tell me - have you ever been to a big college game? Who's your favorite team? And remember let's all be respectful here! I will be the first to say I'm not a fan of Florida, but I don't down any of my girls and guys personally if they are fans.

HAPPY FALL & FOOTBALL! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

fooseball ain't the devil

I personally know plenty of women and men that couldn't care less about football. I also know a lot of women who truly despise the sport. Be it because they lose their husbands to it for months at a time, because they don't understand the sport or simply because they think "it's stupid". I have to agree with Salt when she stated "It's the most wonderful time of the year." I also still say even though I'm not a fan of Ray Lewis, that I would totally pay to see him sing and dance that tune out on to the field. Salt you have connections, you're in good with Edgar, Allen and Poe, make it happen, girl!

I for one adore football. I will be honest, it's taken me a long time to truly grasp the game but for as long as I can remember there has been football in, around, or near my life. My father watched the Redskins for years while I was growing up, I wouldn't say he's a die hard fan but I do remember many Sundays hearing my father cuss up a storm from the living room, and often seeing a yellow dining napkin fly across the room while said foul words were flying. Yellow dining napkin you ask? Well our dining room linens were golden rod at the time, not sure why, my mother never seemed fond of yellow - her and my father were actually obsessed with Colonial Blue hues, our entire house was painted with white walls, and accented with Colonial Blue and Chocolate Brown stenciled highlights. Anyofftopic - the yellow napkin was from our set, maybe it was yellow for Thanksgiving, but I also recall having fancy dinners for my birthday in the formal dining room - Princesses do it up after all, and I'm an only child - and that yellow table cloth was ALWAYS there. I guess if it's formal it's a table linen. F*ck, where was I? Oh yeah FOOTBALL - enough with this girlie shizz...

FOOTBALL has been in my life for years, from my father watching to boyfriend's discussing it. I was never a Redskins fan, much to my father's dismay I'm sure. I guess I wasn't old enough to appreciate them, and at that age didn't care for sports.  I also have no history of the Baltimore Colts in my blood. My father must not have been a fan, the only memory I have of the Colts was seeing a huge sign in my best friends basement behind her parent's bar. I was young, and assumed we had a team there but didn't now all the drama until I was much older.

I gave up on sports at an early age, I'd say about 3rd grade I gave basketball the middle finger because in gym class I got hit in the face when *Bradley Matthews tossed the basket ball at me and I didn't react fast enough, thus causing me to have a nose bleed and sneezed for 2 hours straight (ok maybe it was only 20 minutes but in 3rd grade that was an eternity!). That sealed the deal for basketball being OUT. In middle school we were asked to play field hockey. I like hockey, a lot (GO CAPS!) - I have a great story about myself and a professional hockey team but I'll save that for another day. I really liked this sport and thought, awesome, this is the girl version, I get the rules I'll probably rock at this. I get out on the field in gym class and we start playing, 15 minutes or so into the game *Nicole Bamburg whacks me in the shin with her hockey stick causing me to fall over. Being a tomboy at the time I refused to cry, and if I had any real balls I would have kicked her ass up and down the field. Instead I assumed the fetal position and held my shins and screamed. Yeah, this was gym class at a county school, they didn't issue us shin guards or helmets or anything to protect us for that matter back in the day. That ended my career as a field hockey star. For years in school I never excelled at anything athletic, finally I found a golden sport I was actually good at, that was Volleyball. I never went out for the team though, all the popular girls at my school were on the team, and even though I longed to be a part of their crew, I was too shy and worried about joining the volleyball team. I've always had the irrational fear of playing sports, like soccer and running down the field in the wrong direction and scoring for the other team. That wouldn't happen in volleyball, but one messed up spike and I'd fear those girls would kill me or at least shun me to the bottom of the high school ladder and I worked so hard to keep myself in the middle. I didn't want that stress - instead I went after the one thing that I could do, and that was dance. I excelled at dancing, and thankfully my high school had a dance squad. My second year trying out I made it and by senior year I was the captain. FINALLY something athletic that I could do well at. I know you're saying, but Kelly, it's dance squad, that isn't a sport. To which I will reply "SHUT YOUR FACE! I got a varsity letter in that shizz, and won quite a few trophies at competitions - it's a sport damn it!" I would also argue to my grave the same of the cheerleaders, even though they were our mortal enemies through high school.

So there, I found my calling for sports, sort of. I went to a ton of football games in high school, I even dated a bench warmer football player for 2 weeks my sophomore year. I was also pals with plenty of the guys on the team. That was my issue in high school, I was the girl next door with the hot BFF that all the guys wanted to get with. Me? Yeah they just wanted to be my friend.... STORY. OF. MY. LIFE!

Somewhere in all of this high school drama I started to watch professional football more often with friends. My family in PA have always been huge Steelers fans. I'm shocked that my father isn't one, but he moved to Maryland/D.C. area when he was in his early 20's so I'm assuming this may have been his little bit of rebellion to become a Skins fan. One of my good friends (read: girlfriend of my then boyfriend's BFF), *Syndi, and I hung out a lot and we did a lot together with our boyfriends. Her boyfriend, *Matt was a huge Steelers fan. We ended up watching Pro-Football a lot in those years and I quickly became a Steelers fan because of this. People are always shocked that I didn't become a Ravens fan. I have to say it wasn't for lack of liking them, they are my home team after all,  but I had started my love affair and falling for the Steelers before the Ravens even came on my personal radar. Maybe I should have jumped ships, for the loyalty of my state, but honestly, I just didn't. I stuck by the Steelers and have no regrets (And this past year it was very difficult with all the drama *gives Ben the side eye*). By the time I was 19 and mid way into my first or second year of college, my boyfriend and I broke up - but *Syndi, Matt and I remained friends.

WHEN I REALIZED I WAS A TRUE FAN, NOT ONLY OF THE STEELERS, but OF FOOTBALL TOO. I had been watching pro football for a while with Syn and Matt, (but you know not really watching but, doing the typical "girl not into the game thing" of talking during all the important plays) and I can remember vividly getting ready for the Super Bowl XXX. It was the Steelers vs.Cowboys (the one team in the NFL I can truly say I can't stand - I'm from a Redskin home, that stuff is ingrained at birth, yo!) . *Syndi and I baked a cake for the party, got food together and I remember decorating the cake by hand and creating a Steelers Logo for the cake. I'm talking hand decorated and using my full artistic ability - it came out SO awesome. I had some practice before this because *Syndi had me paint the logo on her finger nails earlier that week - I was a manicurist at the time.

Before the game even started, *Matt dug into the cake. I scolded him and said that was the CELEBRATION CAKE! Needless to say, the Steelers lost. I was so upset, my first Super Bowl that I give a rats ass who actually wins and my team of choice, lost. I blamed it on Matt for a week, claiming he jinxed them by eating the cake too early. I knew then that I was a true fan because I didn't decide to say F the Steelers and go to a new team, I stuck by the Steelers and I have ever since.

I can also remember my first Super Bowl here in Alabama. At the time Mike wasn't that into football. He was never a sports guy either - we bond over that. Somewhere between my first year here and two years ago that all changed. My first year here the Steelers made it into the Super Bowl and I was so excited. However without friends here to celebrate with or watch the game, we really didn't do much but watch it in our apartment and cheer accordingly. I didn't watch a ton of football that year or the year after, mostly because it isn't fun for me to sit in the living room alone and watch a game - I need friends to cheer with me, or against me for me to get into it. Otherwise the roar of the crowd knocks me out cold. I've had some of my best naps watching Redskins football with my Dad. Sorry Dad.

Fast forward to about two years ago - Mike started to get more and more into watching the Steelers games with me, I had officially converted my Alabama boy into a Steelers fan (score!). In return he started to watch more and more Alabama football and I did too. We both quickly became hooked on watching the Crimson Tide. I have to say since we've started paying attention and watching not one but two games a week (pro and college) I've really started to understand football more than ever before. It can be a bit confusing at times, calls for certain things are different in college vs. pro. I've always loved college basketball more than pro basketball (GO TARHEELS & TERPS!) And I'm starting to see myself feel the same about football. I will always love the Steelers and pro-ball but there is just something so awesome about watching college kids play. They are fighting for their lives, their legacy and it seems like they have so much more to risk. They aren't making the big bucks that most NFL players are, they are playing for the game, for the fun, and most, for a professional contract. There is more passion to me in college ball - not that NFL stars aren't passionate, they love what they do and for every jackhole in the NFL that just wants the money and the paycheck there are 20 more that do it for the love of the game, for other people and to give back as well - I just enjoy the determination and passion that comes with college kids.

In one week, Mike and I will heading to our first ever SEC college football game. I am so excited I could shit twinkies! We will be there for opening game day for the Alabama Crimson Tide. I can't wait to see the stadium, to see the college, to party and tailgate all day long in grand ole' Tuscaloosa, Alabama! Forget GTL baby, it's RTR all. day. long!
I'm totally going to be the I in TIDE.  via al.com
I can't believe football season is finally here!!! I NEVER thought I'd be a football fan kind of girl but I'm so happy I am. I get down right up in arms sometimes - and yes, when my team loses I do pout for at least 15 minutes afterward and get a bit cranky. I have done my share of crap talking, but I've also taken a ton of it. Seriously, when you're a Steelers fan from Maryland you get trash talked A LOT! Like I said, I don't hate the Ravens, they are a great team, with a great track record, but my loyalty is with the Pittsburgh boys.

The toughest thing about football season is having a dear friend that roots for your biggest rival of your favorite NFL team. Salt and I don't see eye to eye on teams, but we both love football. If only we could root together for someone we would be an unstoppable cheer section fo' sho! She told me once that she has adopted the Crimson Tide as a college team and that warmed my heart - I in turn didn't get too bitter when the Ravens picked up my boy Terrence Cody this year in the NFL Draft. I wanted him to be a Steeler so bad I could taste it. This is your open invite Salt, I would love for you and Dragon to come visit and hit up a Tide game with us. Finally we could cheer for the same team! In the end I'm so happy we both love the fooseball, I just wish we didn't want to scream at each other during the games when both our beloved teams play. I am totes jealous she gets to go to the Steelers vs. Ravens game the day after my birthday this year. I have a feeling if we went to that game together we might end up killing each other (not really, but I might end up dead in the parking lot via any other die hard Raven fan). MY LOVE YOU SALT!

Stay tuned for the return of TAILGATE RECIPES! It's that time of year so I'll be making something tasty and sharing it with you all season long! If you have any requests or want to know if I've made anything in particular let me know (email or comment). Also, feel free to share your favorite game day snacks!

So I ask, who's your favorite team? Are you ready for some football?

*Names have been changed to protect people you won't know if I told you about them anyway. You ever notice how your grandmothers do that? For years my grandmother, God rest her soul, would send me letters about her neighborhood friends and always told me about them. I had no clue who these people were but in the end that didn't matter. Much like you have no clue who these people are but deal with it OK? I did for my G-ma so do it for me.
